11.1 Ayurvedic Pranic Healing: Introduction


It is possible to have a therapeutic effects on three humors by using pranic healing. This method works directly on the five pranas. Each prana correspond to one of the three humors and all correspond to the chief prana. Vata is the humor most closely related to prana, as is unseen, unstable, and provides the principle of movement to the other two humors.
I have used this method as a support to other more common Ayurvedic therapies for several years. Pranic healing was my first interest in the arts, and I continue to use it daily. It is an excellent support to all other Ayubvedic therapies because it works directly on the prana and therefore, the humors.

Pranic healing, while very effective, is best seen as a supplement aid to balance vata. Because vata is unstable, the effects of pranic therapy are often lost in two three days. It is very different to make a lasting change in chonic imbalance of vata with pranic healing. However, pranic therapies can greatly increase the speed it normally take to control chronic vata imbalance. It should be said that whatever you do for yourself is far stronger than any outside aids. Pranic healing provides an excellent support for vata management and is very as vata is the primary cause of disease, the assistance of pranic healing should be welcomed by Ayurvedic practitioners.

Vata is traditionally treated directly with special enemas and colonics. Pranic healing offers a substitute to this more traditional vata management. Often in today’s world it is neither practical nor possible to see a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to receive these kind of therapies. Pranic healing offers an option to direct vata management. It method that one may learn and master within a year depending on past experience and the amount of practice does. It is also suitable for the very young and old, those very sick debilitated. As such, it can in the actual application of Ayurvedic management methods in the daily life.

Pranic healing as method is explained clearly in Prana: the secret of yoga healing. Therefore this chapter will not explain the method, rather it explains it explain the therapeutic effect of the pranas on the three humors that I have observed over the last several years of combining more classical Ayrvedic therapies with pranic healing.

Having established that prana controls or is a refined state of the vata humor it should be clear to all that any direct change in the pranic currents will affect vata. The knowledge that vata is the humor most responsible for disease, and most responsible for imbalance in the other two humors has also been established.

Pranic healing is best used to control vata, but it may also be used to harmonize the function of both pitta and kapha. Using pulse diagnosis I have clearly seen the direct effects on vata before and after a pranic treatment. The results are less dramatic on the other two humor, but are still easily felt with pulse diagnosis. Give below are the effect by humor and how to best correct common diseases associated with each humor. This is much easier than treating diseases manifesting as one humor but caused by another humor. My experience shows that harmonizing the vata make treating the more complicated from of humoral imbalance somewhat easier

The traditional locations and actions of the five pranas are shown in figure F001.
To review, the function of the five pranas (see figure F001) are as follows.
- Prana- the inward-moving prana; seated in the head and heart; controls thinking and emotions.
- Apana- the downward-moving prana; seated in the colon; controls all the processes of elimination.
- Samana- the equalizing prana; seated in the navel; controls the digestion and harmonizes the above pranas.
- Udana- the upward-moving prana; located in the throat; controls speech and expression.
- Vyana- the pervading prana, seated in the heart; united the other prana and the body, controls nerve andmuscle action.

It should noted that the prana resides primarily in the first subtle body after the physical body. This body completely permeates the physical body and therefore supplies prana (nourishment) to both the physical and subtle bodies. While the vata humor is seated in the colon, it is controlled directly by the Apana rana, which controls the downward movement in the body. Thus by working on the first subtle energetic body (etheric or pranic), we are in essence working on all the bodies. The treatments give hear are for the etheric body.
