8.4 Famous Ayurvedic Formulas


8.4.1TRIPHALA FORMULA (amlataki, bibhitaki, haritaki)

Taste: Sweet, astringent, sour, pungent, bitter
Attribute: Oily
Potency: Cold
Long-Term: Sweet
General Action: Appetizer, rejuvenating, antioxidant, cardiac tonic, mild laxative, and promotes eyesight
Pacific Action: Digestive stimulant
Therapeutic Action: Triphala is an equal combination fo amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki. It is a balanced formula for all the humors.

Tri = three; phala = fruits. Triphala is the best known and most used formula in Ayurveda. I t has been in use for thousands of years. Triphala has all the properties of its three ingredients: amla, haritaki and bibhitaki. The advantage of this formula is that it is milder in action and more balanced than any of the three alone. When taken in large doses at night before bed, it has a cleansing and detoxifying action; when ½ to 1 gram is taken with meals, it has a building and rejuvenating effect.
Used regularly it is good for gentle, slow detoxification of the digestive tract and then the deep tissues. It also has the ability to normalize all three humors with continual use. As each of the three ingredients show strong inhibiting actions against the HIV and other viruses, this formula should be considered as a daily dietary addition to people working with, or exposed to, high-risk areas or people. The overall tonic effect of the these three fruits has been known for thousands of years in India and other Asian countries.
Prolonged use of triphala is safe and non-habit-forming; in fact it rejuvenates the intestines, tissues and cells of the body, present cancer, and aids in weight loss. It is known to promote the absorption of the B vitamins and vitamins contained in our food. Triphala calms the apana prana and so helps in the absorption of prana in the colon. As a daily supplement triphala is hard to beat; that’s why in India they say “even if your mother leaves you, everything will be fine if you have triphala”.

Dose: 2 to 4 grams per day at bedtime, or 1 to 2 grams with meals
